Second Annual Dictionary Day Held February 14th

Schools Celebrate Love of Literacy
to Promote College-Going Culture

February 14, 2008—Today, more than 800 third graders had more to look forward to than hearts and candy—they found out about the Love of Literacy.  Third graders across the Campbell Union School District received dictionaries of their very own during the district's second annual Dictionary Day.  The event is one of several "College Going Culture" activities the district has planned this year.

With Dictionary Day, Campbell Union School District and its partners reach out to children early to promote a love of words and of learning. Research shows that third grade is the crucial time to capture and focus excitement and curiosity about words and language.  With more vocabulary, research shows, students are more likely to engage in discussion regarding higher education and more likely to want to attend college.

Dictionary Day presenters included Superintendent Johanna VanderMolen, Campbell Councilman Don Furtado, San Jose Councilman Pete Constant, California Dictionary Project President Elizabeth Rhein and many other professionals from the community who wore items from their college alma maters as they showed students how dictionaries are used.
