Common Core State Standards

New Common Core State Standards are coming to our schools in 2014-15. These new standards are the foundation for restructuring our education system to prepare students for 21st century college and careers.  Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade. In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school.

This is the first time that nearly the whole nation has the same high standards for students. (46 states have adopted them!)  Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.

The change means exciting changes and a lot of work to prepare for incorporating the new standards into lessons and assessments.

The new standards are fewer in number but go deeper into higher-order thinking skills, require more project-based learning, and emphasize the “Four Cs” of 21st century education:

  • Communication:  oral and written skills that explain thinking process;
  • Collaboration: working together with group accountability;
  • Creativity: generating a variety of ideas, alternatives, and possibilities;
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: necessary for real world application of skills and thinking “outside the box.

How to support your child's learning

The National PTA has grade-by-grade parent guides (in English and Spanish) that offer more information about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and ways in which you can help your child at home.  Go to: http://pta.org/content.cfm?ItemNumber=2796

There is also information on our own website on the "Parents" page.  Go to:http://www.campbellusd.org/parents
