Parent Program Wins Award
Parenting class earns state-wide Golden Bell Award.
The Positive Discipline Education for Latino Parents – “de padre a padre”— class in Campbell Union School District is a proven success for many reasons. That success recently earned it several awards, including prestigious Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association and the Hoffmann Exemplary Program Award from the Santa Clara County School Boards Association.
The class is different because sessions are gender-specific—a session for mothers and a session for fathers—as parents learn the same parenting strategies in co-parenting, homework assistance, positive discipline and the nuances of their role in their child’s educational experience. The class is exemplary because it has has made a big difference to couples and families, improving communication, children's behavior, achievement at school.
Participants responding to anonymous questionnaires consistently tell us that the classes are very useful and provide practical skills they can apply at home. They tell us that they would recommend the class to others because they have seen positive changes in their homes and families as a result of the training. Several also desire additional training and are interested in becoming trainers themselves.
