Plans for New PreK-8 School Take Shape

Recommendation about new school on Campbell Middle School campus goes to Governing Board

road sign reads opportunity ahead

At its June 1st meeting, the Campbell Union School District Governing Board heard a recommendation from Superintendent Andrew to establish a new PreK-8th grade school on the Campbell Middle School (CMS) campus in August 2018.  (Available at the District Administration Office or online.)

The recommendation includes the following elements:

  • The current CMS site will not enroll 5th or 6th grade students for the 2017-18 school year.
The students will be relocated to Monroe Middle School (MMS) or Rolling Hills Middle School (RHMS). Students living north of Campbell Ave. will attend Monroe Middle School while students living south of Campbell Ave. will attend Rolling Hills. Additional resources will be provisioned at MMS and RHMS to accommodate the increased student population.

  • The CMS students in 7th and 8th grades will have a robust program for the 2017-18 school year, the final year of the current middle school at the CMS campus. Electives, sports teams, and music will be offered to CMS 7th and 8th graders next school year.

  • The new school will open as a TK-4th grade school beginning the fall of 2018.

Community Input Sought

A second Community Input Forum will be held on June 12, from 6 p.m. until 8:15 p.m., at Campbell Middle School. This meeting will be an opportunity for the public to provide input on short- and long-term decisions relating to creating the new school and the recommendations of the Transformation Team. Spanish interpretation services will be available, and parents needing school-age childcare during the meeting can make advance reservations through the CUSD Extensions Department.

Based on the Transformation Team’s recommendation, District staff developed a comprehensive action plan, detailing the specific steps required to successfully implement the transformation of the CMS campus into sought-after educational destination for students and families.

The recommendation will go to the Board again on June 22nd.  If approved, a new Implementation Team will be responsible for completing the school's program design and executing the elements of the action plan, effective July 1, 2017.
