Before you volunteer

Thank you for helping support our students. The clearance steps you need depend on how you’ll work with them.

Working with students without direct staff supervision? You’ll need fingerprint clearance (Live Scan) and online mandated reporter training. Under SB 848, training covers reporting responsibilities, preventing child abuse and sexual assault, and appropriate boundaries with students.

The district requires anyone over 18 who interacts with students outside direct parent or school-employee supervision to register as a volunteer. The FAQs below explain which requirements apply to different roles.

Driving students? Drivers must be 21 or older and complete additional clearance.

Submit an approved volunteer application, valid California driver's license, DMV K-4 driving record, insurance declaration page, current insurance card and vehicle registration.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need fingerprinting and training?

You need Live Scan fingerprint clearance and online child safety and mandated reporter training if you will supervise students independently. Examples include working one-on-one without staff present, overnight camp chaperoning, or a field trip group without a teacher. Your school will confirm the requirements for your role and provide training instructions during the application process.

What if I am always supervised?

Live Scan and this training are not required for roles under direct staff supervision at all times, such as helping in a classroom while the teacher is present. You must never be alone with students. All volunteers still need TB documentation and email approval from Human Resources before starting.
